Tobacco-Free Colleges advocates are banding together to change the cultural acceptance
of tobacco use on college campuses across North Carolina. Nearly 28% of all 18-24
year-olds in North Carolina smoke and this is the only age group nationally in which
smoking rates are increasing.
College students today are exposed to smoking at every corner, from dorms and libraries
on campus, to the coffee shops and bars they frequent. It is important that advocates
create tobacco-free normative environments to reverse the current trend. Students
entering college as non-smokers are found to be 40% less likely to take up smoking
if living in smoke-free dorms.
Smoke-free advocates draw attention to the known dangers associated with tobacco
use and secondhand smoke; they also do something about the issue. Activists work
to create change on their college campus, building support, raising awareness, advocating
for 100% tobacco-free policies and promoting the Health and Wellness Trust Fund
(HWTF) funded tobacco use Quitline (800-QUIT-NOW).
