Tobacco-Free Colleges Initiative has successful first year

    Legislative Update

    Two bills just signed by Governor Easley will have a potentially profound effect on HWTF college grantees, allowing them great flexibility in working towards meaningful local tobacco use prevention policies.

    • Senate Bill 862-UNC Smoke Free: Signed into law on June 27th, it permits:
      • UNC Health Care System and the ECU School of Medicine, Health Sciences Complex to adopt 100% tobacco-free campus policies;
      • All other constituent institutions of the UNC system to regulate smoking inside all campus buildings and within 100 linear feet of building grounds.

    • House Bill 24-Smoking in State Govt. Buildings/ Prohibition: Signed into law on July 8th, HB 24 includes the following:
      • Prohibits smoking in buildings owned, leased or occupied by state government including nearly all UNC dorms and other university buildings, thereby strengthening SB 862.
      • Extends similar legal freedoms to local governments, allowing them to regulate smoking in local government buildings and vehicles.
